In a moment of loss and crushing despair, she struck a deceptive bargain with her husband to protect his name as he built his Texas empire. Years later, when he was gone in a hail of bullets, it came back to haunt her in ways she never imagined. Now she must strip away the hatred which has festered over a lifetime before it destroys her. But will the truth, reborn like the Phoenix, sever the carefully forged bonds between herself and her children? Susanna feels fenced in and ripe for slaughter like the longhorns beyond her window. Damn you, Nathan Kingsley! Damn you for what you did! Damn you for dying and leaving me with the mess you made!

This week I welcome Vintage Romance Author, Judy Nickles. Thanks for joining me, Judy.

Thanks for hosting me Maighread.

Let’s find out a little bit about your work and your latest novel.

  1. What genre do you write or do you write more than one?

I began writing vintage romance (1900s-1950s) and branched out into cozy mysteries with the Penelope Pembroke Cozy Mystery Series and then into romantic suspense with The Dreamland Series. But I also write other kinds of fiction and short stories.

  1. Why did you choose this genre?

Growing up in the era just after WW II with parents who had been raised during the Depression and grandparents who remembered another century, I loved all things “vintage”, so it was natural to set my first books in bygone days.

  1. What is your latest book?

Ruthann’s War is under contract with The Wild Rose Press (my fifth with them) and is currently awaiting a second round of edits. The Showboat Reunion is my second “short” with Solstice Publishing. It hasn’t yet begun edits. Susanna’s Secret was released at the end of June.

  1. When did it release?

Susanna’s Secret released at the end of June. Ruthann’s War will likely release in 2017. I don’t know about The Showboat Reunion.

  1. Who is your target audience?

I’m looking for people who like a “good clean read” about real people in real situations. My characters have their human failings and make mistakes, but the messages of survival, forgiveness and reconciliation, and moving on pervades each book. So people who enjoy a good mystery with some romance on the side–or a straight romance without regular trips to the bedroom (!) will find my books a memorable read. They’re not “sweety sweet” just because they’re “clean”!

  1. What do you hope they learn from/like about your work?

In this sex-oriented age, I’d like younger readers to understand that sex is a gift but not the basis for a lasting love/marriage. Older readers (hopefully) already know this. Also, I’d like folks to understand that heroes come in all shapes and sizes, so I often write characters with disabilities who are generally overlooked or written off by society.

  1. Tell us a bit about yourself?

I’m a retired teacher (everything from special education to English as a second language) who got serious about writing after retirement 9 years ago. In those years, I’ve published both traditionally and independently–and acquired 5 grandchildren! Traveling, genealogical research, and reading (mostly non-fiction) top the list of things to do when I’m not writing. And, I like to say I’m having my adolescent rebellion 50+ years late!

  1. Do you belong to a writing circle/group?

No, although I’d enjoy a compatible group. The ones I’ve tried are too crowded with egos–or at least, it seems to me they’re in the group more to socialize and be “important” than to learn the craft of writing/publishing. I have wonderful, brutally honest beta readers, however, whom I couldn’t do without and appreciate  very much.

9. Do you have any new stories on the go?

Oh, my, yes! My documents folder is bursting with research for articles to write, two completed but unpublished full-length novels, shorts stories in all stages of (in)completion, and “the great American novel” I’ve ONLY been working on for at least 40 years and which will probably never see the light of day. But writing is something I do for my own pleasure and satisfaction. If it ever ceases to be “fun”, I’ll hit “delete” and move on.
